Upgrd 65: Marriott Rewards

In this week's frequent traveler podcast we return to hotel loyalty programs and hotel elite status - this week focusing on the Marriott Rewards program.  Most of our panelists do not recommend the Marriott program, unless you are staying there due to contractual obligations. While it falls towards the bottom of our list of programs to obtain status in - there are still some situations where it makes sense. Listen in to hear more about the Marriott Rewards program and other topics including:

  • Double EQMs and Triple RDMs from RDU, STL, PIT, and BNA
  • Aegean joining Star Alliance
  • Your Hometown, Your Airline segment continues with recommendations for Australian flyers
  • Marriot Rewards program including their Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Premier status levels
  • and more...

If you have any Marriott Rewards tips, tricks, or clarification please let us know. We'd also love to hear from some current Australian flyers on their recommendation where to credit miles. Please leave your comments below.

I really like your podcast, what I will really like to see is Your Hometown, Your Airline about a Latin American city, mainly Mexico City. It's the hub for Aeromexico (Sky team) and Mexicana ( OneWorld) . Not to mention that there are 5 Star Alliance airlines, more than any other Alliances. I can send you more information. As the question came up in the show here are the benefits of getting LH SEN status.

Senator Status on LH will give you Star Gold for 2 years, access to SEN lounges (quite a few in the US as well) and 2 SEN e-certs which will allow you to upgrade LH, OS, LX ... paid tickets. So not so bad... if you get it via the certainly more lucrative bmi route (as opposed to Aegaen).

@Hamurabi2008: That's a great point and one I didn't consider. This likely confirms my choice of BD over Agean this year.

Thanks for the comment.

I'm opting for Aegean in my circumstances.
I'm happy to earn the mileage plus RDM bonus on UA/CO/LH TATL and when I wind up on US, I'll credit to Aegean.

Enjoyed listening to the podcast this morning. We (specifically the SO), just did a Marrriott Rewards Platinum challenge, since she's been staying (regularly) at a Fairfield Inn. The challenge was started on May 17th, and she was given until August 31st to achieve 18 nights. Was granted 'conditional' Platinum immediately. (and she just reached the 18 nights last week). Her biggest perk has been a 100% upgrade rate @ the Fairfield Inn (which was just renovated 1 year ago). Upgrades are to studio or 1 bedroom suites. Considering her corporate rate is around $80'ish; the upgrades are great (lowest studio rate is $139/night). Of course, this is YMMV, but this Fairfield Inn seems to value loyal (Platinum) customers, and most upgrades are pre-blocked in advance.

Just found you guys this weekend and love the podcast. Just a couple points regarding Marriott Rewards. Marriott does roll over nights into the next year, they will also bump you up to the next tier based on rolling 12 months. The catch is to maintain status you will have to earn the tier the hard way the following year.

I look forward to catching up with all your podcasts.
