Upgrd 24: Fifty 50

In this week's frequent flyer discussion, we talk about the mid-tier (50,000 mile) elite level of the major carriers in the U.S. We know many of our listeners maintain this status and want to know some of the differences of the programs including:

  • Free upgrades vs coupon or sticker paid upgrades
  • First class seat count and how it affects your choice of airline for upgrades
  • Whether you should choose a program based on your location only
  • Does a program like Delta or Continental, with their current 75,000 mile top tier, make it easier to get to the next level

We also discuss Continental's recent comments that a merger is not out of the question anymore, and recent Delta Airlines changes.

For the record... Air Canada Elite and Super Elite (which are both Star Gold Levels) give you access to any Star Gold lounge around the world, including RCC and US lounges, and of course access to the Maple Leaf Lounges in Canada, London, Paris, and LAX.

United and US are the only carriers in *A who don't allow their own Star Gold members access to the lounges domestically.

BMI silver gets you access to BMI lounges except for on short-haul economy saver fares.

BMI gold gives you access to BMI lounges except when flying on BMI baby, and also gives you Star Gold access to lounges worldwide.

One downside to access the RCC and US lounges as a *Gold, you do not get free internet access, as you would with a paid RCC or US membership, and as mentioned you do no longer have free access to economy plus seating on United.
