UPGRD.com server status 31 October 2012

Firstly let me apologize for UPGRD.com being offline for so long. The site is hosted in a data center in lower Manhattan. During Hurricane Sandy, storm surges caused much of the power grid in lower Manhattan to shut down - in part due to a transformer explosion nearby on 14th Street. ConEd, the utility company, then shut down power to most of the lower half of Manhattan affecting over 250,000 businesses and homes. It will likely be two to three more days before power is fully restored.

The data center generators operated for eight hours as planned, but the power outage has been much longer. Data center crews were unable to gain entry to the building until it was safe to do so, and then found that the fuel pumps were damaged due to the storm. Although they did replace the fuel pump early on Wednesday morning, the generators only worked for an hour before shutting down again.

Now that the generators are online again, and they have 3,000 gallons of fuel on hand and another fuel supply coming in the morning, I expect the site to remain up. In the meantime, I'm backing up the site to anther off-site server in case of further issues. Please bear with us as we transition the next couple of days. Some functionality may be limited during this time.

Thank you for your continued readership!

Mike, thank you for keeping the site up! I enjoy reading all the posts on your site a lot! It's been my homepage on my personal laptop for a few months now! Being in New York and sitting through the storm I know what you are talking about! Thanks for the work!
