As most of us expected, United announced early this morning that like Continental, alcoholic beverages and Wi-Fi will now be free for all guests in the Red Carpet Club, United's airport lounge network.
Red Carpet Club and Presidents Club members will continue to enjoy access to each other’s lounge network, as well as the Star Alliance network and affiliated lounges around the world. Also, beginning today, Red Carpet Clubs offer free wireless Internet access and a selection of complimentary alcoholic beverages
Before you throw away your drink vouchers (I've got a stack of at least 50), realize that United's "free" drinks will likely not include "premium" alcohol, therefore (as in the past), you'll still be able to use two chits for top shelf drinks.
As for the Wi-Fi cards (I've got plenty of those too): until UA dissolves its contract with T-Mobile or is able to alter it so a unique pin or membership number is not required to log on to the internet, it would not surprise me if United hands out the Wi-Fi cards to anyone who wants them, a-la US Airways--so don't throw those out yet either.
There was little doubt this change was coming, but its nice that it happened on day one of the new United. More on that later...
