United to bring back 500 milers

If this page is any indication of what the future holds, then we'll see the return of United's 500 mile certificates.

In reality, it's likely an aged page that was never removed.  Unfortunately .bomb is cluttered with these types of items which makes getting reliable information a challenge.  Take for instance Connoisseur Class.  United renamed it close to ten years ago, yet the electronic receipts still reflect the old name.

Aside from United not paying attention to detail, a lot of the challenges revolved on United's reliable on Apollo for so much and it's cases like this that demonstrate the limitations of the platform.

On a side note, even though they are no longer visible, agents still have the ability to see if and how many e500s you have as I had an agent offer to use mine a few months ago.

They're even available for use on TED!

And we know they had a great first class section.

United did not actually eliminate the e500, they just removed it as a currency type for elites. General members are still allowed to use them, and here is the FAQ on them from the United Website: What is a 500-mile upgrade?

A 500-Mile Upgrade is a coupon that can be paper or electronic entitling you to request a one-class upgrade for a segment 500 miles or less on United® or United Express® within Region 1. 500-Mile Upgrades may also be combined and used for longer flights within Region 1. They are valid for one year from issue. For more details, please see the terms and conditions.

Please note that beginning March 19, 2010, 500-Mile Upgrades will be replaced by Unlimited Domestic Upgrades for elite members at the Global Services, 1K®, Premier Executive® and Premier® levels.

General members and Premier Associate® members may continue to use their 500-Mile Upgrades as they do today, until their regular expiration dates 12 months from the date of issue.

@Nick: I was piqued by your post and decided to do a bit more digging. According to: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,53006,00.html

In particular, it says: "As of March 19, 2010, 500-Mile Upgrades will no longer be issued or available for purchase. General members may continue to use their 500-Mile Upgrades until their regular expiration dates."

It appears the 500 miler upgrades are indeed going away and United opted to honor the outstanding ones.
