As some folks know bmi miles have been rather valuable since they have some great redemption opportunities. With bmi's Diamond Club going away sometime next year, I figured it was a good time to start some redemptions.
I decided that I wanted to use my miles for something I wouldn't be able to do with other programs. After much debating, I decided a trip to South Africa was in order routing via South America.
After much planning I was able to craft the following itinerary in Business class:
San Juan, PR - Newark, NJ with a stop in Newark for four days. A few days later the itinerary is Newark - Boston - Munich - Johannesburg - Cape Town. I spend a few days in Cape Town and then return to the states. The return starts in Johannesburg since initating in Cape Town was costing me an extra 13,000 miles. (The purchase price for a Cape Town to Johannesburg ticket is $127). The return itinerary ended up as Johannesburg - Buenos Airies - Washington, DC - San Juan.
If you're wondering why San Juan is my origin, it's because San Juan is in a different region then the continental US and thus has a lower redemption level then departing from the states.
Total price? 120,000 miles and $515 in taxes and fuel surcharges.
The map of the itinerary looks pretty nifty as well:
