Aloft Bangkok

wp_20130521_005

I recently spent a week at the Aloft Bangkok.  If you read my blog you know I'm a huge fan of the Starwood Aloft brand for both the consistency and reasonable prices.  This property is by far the largest property of the 20+ I've stayed at across the 60 properties.  The staff was very accommodating and speaks enough English that I didn't have any problems getting things done.  The hotel is located in the tourist Sukhumvit area of Bangkok and conveniently located ...

Korean Air Business Class Food

wp_20130518_004

After my debacle getting a new flight after Delta postponed my original flight to NRT; I was rebooked on Korean Air to Seoul.  This was my first experience on Koren Air and I wasn't disappointed.  The flight attendants were all very attentive and much better looking than what I'm use to on Delta.  The food and accommodations on the 777 were also much better than what you get on the 747.  Both my flights were in business ...

Preparing for an Asian Vacation

First off, I want to start by apologizing for my long hiatus from blogging.  I was going through some transitions, but I’m happy to be back traveling and blogging.

I’ve always dreamed of taking a long trip abroad, but never had the time or money to make it happen.  I recently left my job and realized this might be the only chance I get to travel for an extended period of time.  With hotel/airline points to spare, I’m setting out to explore ...

Delta delays my flight to BKK tomorrow

screen-shot-2013-05-17-at-6.12.10-pm

I really love Delta! I'm packed and ready to leave tomorrow morning and I just received a call from Delta's automated system informing me my flight from ATL-NRT has been delayed by three hours and I will miss my connecting flight to BKK.  They assure me they are working on rebooking my NRT-BKK flight and suggest I call back in a few hours for more info.

I'm not one for waiting, so I'm on the phone with Medallion desk right now. There are no other connecting flights from ...

Delta Middle Seat Love

screen-shot-2012-05-01-at-2.47.01-pm

I had a flight on Monday using same-day confirmed (awesome Diamond perk), but flying standby because the flight I wanted was oversold.  As soon as I arrived at the SkyClub they confirmed my seat, which was ironic because five minutes earlier the gate agent said it was impossible.  Needless to say I got on my flight to DTW and was upgraded on my second leg to PHX.  On my flight to DTW I got stuck in a middle seat, but they put me to an exit row to avoid complete misery.  I ...

Visiting Florida's Space Coast

pictureslab_b&w_fx_2012-03-01_16-02-02-(497x640)

There are several things that attract people to Florida including the sun, beaches, Disney, and the space coast.  As many people begin their journey south for spring break, I urge you to make a pit stop at Florida’s Space Coast.  The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) offers a unique experience that appeals to all age ranges.  No matter where you are headed, the space coast is a convenient detour.  It’s three hours from Fort Lauderdale/Miami, 30 minutes from Orlando, ...

St. Regis Princeville Resort

SAM_2212

I’m finally getting a chance to write my review of the St. Regis Princeville Resort.  Life got busy after my trip to Hawaii, but better late than never.  Hawaii was truly the trip of a lifetime made even better by my stay at the St. Regis.  My only complaint  was that I missed George Clooney filming "The Descendants" at the hotel.  Maybe I will run into him next time I’m in Kauai.

Kauai by Helicopter

SAM_2464

I did extensive research before visiting Kauai and one activity was consistently recommended: helicopter tour.  After comparing reviews of various tour companies I settled on Blue Hawaiian.  I found a great deal online for $161/person on the Eco-Star tour.  An experienced pilot guided the 55-minute ride in an American Eurocopter ECO-Star helicopter.  The pilot, Kevin, provided historical background as we got up-close to the most remote regions of the “Garden ...

Delta Diamond Members Riding Fly to Connecting Flights in a Porsche

Screen Shot 2011-12-29 at 2.11.54 AM

I had to see it to believe it.  I landed at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson last week and as we approached the gate a Porsche SUV was at the adjacent aircraft.  A Delta agent quickly escorted a man in a business suit down the jet bridge stairway into the Porsche.  It happened so quickly the only thing I could confirm was that the man wasn’t Richard Anderson (Delta CEO).  I figured this was the only reasonable explanation for a luxury car whisking away someone ...

Kauai: Kalalau Trail and Na Pali Coast

Screen Shot 2011-12-21 at 8.31.58 AM

On my third day in Kauai I thought it would be an awesome idea to hike the north coast unreachable by car.  I read a great guidebook “The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook,” by Andrew Doughty that outlined the various trails on the island.  The Kalalau Trail running for 11 miles along with north coast looked the most appealing.  You drive north on Highway 56 through Ha’ena State Park until the road ends.  The trail starts there.

This hike is not for the ...

Hawaii Vacation: Day 2

I didn’t arrive at my hotel until midnight on Sunday so I couldn’t see what was around me until early the next morning.  My hotel, St. Regis Princeville, was a 45-minute drive north from Lihue airport.  Nothing says welcome to Hawaii like dangerous curves and terrain with no streetlights and heavy rain.

Once I woke up and looked outside there was a true appreciation for this place (and Starwood’s Free Getaway ...

Four Part Flight from FLL to LIH in Pictures

WP_001172

The flight from Fort Lauderdale to Lihue, Hawaii took 18 hours, 3 flights, and 3 Sky Club visits.  I was booked on a 767-300 (international) with fully reclining seats, but last minute Delta switched it out with a 767-300 (domestic) that has standard seats.  Fortunately I was too excited to sleep so I took pictures, read, and watched movies while drinking mimosa's in first class.  I saved all my computer work for the flight from SLC to HNL completely spacing there would be no ...

Hawaii on Points

Next week I’m traveling to Hawaii funded primarily by frequent traveler rewards.  I know Christmas is peak tourist season in Hawaii, but the timing is unavoidable.  My motivation for choosing Hawaii is to see my alma mater, Xavier University, play in the ESPN Diamond Head Classic.  Who doesn’t plan their vacation around their favorite college basketball team??

Here is a breakdown of the frequent traveler points/miles redeemed to fund my 8-day ...

Commercial Break or Safety Video?

As a frequent Delta Air Lines flier, I have noticed a troubling phenomenon.  The planes equipped with TV’s for in-flight entertainment are increasingly being used to run advertisements during the pre-flight safety video.

It started a few months back with a short “welcome” clip from Delta CEO, Richard Anderson, played prior to the safety video.  I was confident his monotone voice and coached enthusiasm would be short-lived. I was wrong.  It was the ...

Tweet Virgin Atlantic for Flight Status

Virgin Atlantic travelers can now use Twitter for up-to-date flight information.  In their official statement yesterday, Virgin said customers will receive the requested information "within seconds.”  It’s a painless process, just tweet @VAAInfo with your flight number and departure date in the format "VSXX DDMM."  For multi-leg flights add the airport code of your most recent departure city after the date.  Let’s practice.  Say I have a flight today from Miami (MIA) to Heathrow (LHR).  I would tweet “@VAAInfo VS6 1511.”  Done!

I’m glad to see another travel company turning to social media to simplify life and provide value for customers.
