College Student By Day, World Traveler by Weekend

I am not the typical college student. While many of my friends spend their weekends at parties, or sleeping in, I spend my time traveling throughout the world. Past weekend trips have included London, Frankfurt, Shanghai, and Sydney. I’ve also fallen in love with Hawaii, taking more than five trips to the Hawaiian islands since December 2010. Thanks to frequent fare wars between United/American & Hawaiian, I’ve been able to take advantage of round-trip tickets from San Francisco for as little at $225.

My name is Daniel, and I am a student at the University of Kansas--Go Jayhawks!--, as well as a United 1K and American Executive Platinum member. In addition to my airlines statuses, I am a Diamond member with Hyatt, and a Gold member with Hilton. You can also find me on FlyerTalk & MilePoint, posting as FriendlySkies.

My hopes for this blog are simple. I plan to share reports from some of the the trips that I take, as well as recommendations on ways to maximize the return from your favorite frequent flier or guest program. Want to know how to earn almost 4,000 Hyatt points on a $65 stay? Are you looking for the best premium cabin for a honeymoon, birthday, anniversary, or family vacation? If you said yes to either of those questions, or find yourself with other questions about the travel industry, look no further than the Friendly Skies.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be taking my first Round-The-World trip. Starting in Denver, with stops in Toronto, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, London, and Frankfurt, I’ll be sampling some of the best first and business class products of the Star Alliance carriers. I’m also looking forward to sharing a report of Cathay Pacific first class, as well as their world-renowned lounge, The Wing. Stay tuned to UPGRD, as I’ll be writing new sections every couple of days.

From a fellow frequent flier...

You have your entire life to fly around the world. You only have 4 (or 5) years to have a ridiculous amount of fun in a low consequence environment (college). Don't forget to enjoy that too!

@Kevin: we are at least working to give him part of that college experience next month, see the thread on milepoint ;)
