Barclaycard Reconsideration Tips & Tricks

Barclaycard has a number of great credit card offers available and they are actively trying to compete with American Express, Citi, and Chase for your business. A few cards are available for airlines including: Lufthansa, US Airways, Virgin America, & Frontier Airlines (click each link for a review of the card). In addition, they offer general point-earn cards that are redeemable for cash back opportunities for travel related expenses like the $400 cash back Arrival card. Yet, with all of these great credit card offers, they tend to be more conservative in approving multiple lines of credit than, say, Chase or American express. Therefore, if you are applying for multiple cards, follow these simple steps.

1)      Apply for Multiple Barclaycard cards the same day.

If you have never applied for a card from Barclaycard, consider applying for more than 1 if you get instant approval on your first application. There are a number of stories of people being approved for 3 or 4 cards on the same day before their automatic approval system rejects an application. From my own personal experience, this worked for me the first time I applied for Barlcay Cards, but now since I already have Barclaycard accounts, each one needs a manual review.

2)      If you do not get instant approval, call the reconsideration line immediately.

The reconsideration line is 866.408.4064. This is a DIRECT number, so you will immediatly be routed to a customer service rep. When you call, be friendly and explain why you are looking to have the card. If you have more than one card with them, tell them why each card is important to you. (I.e. you need the Lufthansa’s Miles & More Card for flights to Europe which you take a couple of times and year, the Virgin America Card for West Coast Travel, and the Arrival Card for international travel due to the no foreign transaction fees.) By explaining each card to the representative, you are more likely to be approved for an additional card. They can be corky on who they approval and who needs a manual approval. In my experience, the sooner you call the better your odds. Do not be discourage and do not wait for the letter in the mail stating you were approved or denied!

3)      Move credit around.

Like Chase, they will work with you to move your current credit limit from one card to another. Did you apply for a credit card that you are no longer using? If so, then move that credit line to the new card. You also have the ability to reduce one credit line to create a credit line for a new card. You can easily reduce one credit card line from $8,000 to $1000 and open the new card with a credit line of $7k. If the representative does not suggest this, then don’t be afraid to!

4)      Apply for Barclaycards the SAME day you apply for cards from other banks.

Barclaycard does not like to see multiple new account credit inquiries on your credit history. If you have a number of credit inquiries on your account, Barclaycard may deny your application. Recently, when I applied for the Lufthansa Miles & More card, I had 6 inquiries on my credit history. The representative asked me to explain each one, afterwards he approved me. Be prepared to explain why you need each line of credit. Or better yet, just apply for each card from Citi, Amex, Barclaycard, Chase, etc. on the same day. By doing so, Barclaycard will not see the other credit inquiries from the same day and will not question your intention. This will increase your approval chances. Today (the day I wrote this post), I applied for a Citi card, Chase card, and Barclaycard and they could only see previous inquiries from American express from 3 months prior!

Having the Same Barclaycard Twice

The upside to Barclaycard quirkiness is they sometimes allow individuals to have more than one of the same credit card. There is a lot of discussion on flyertalk about individuals being approved for the SAME credit card a mere 4-7 months after apply for the same card! This means you can DOUBLE your sign up bonus on almost any cards! One person reports having the same card 4 times in their wallet! But when reading through all the chatter you'll notice that most people wait 4-7 months between Barclaycard applications.

If you are apply for the SAME card be sure to wait 6 months and try to limit the number in credit inquiries on your account. Its easier to get an instant approval for a credit card that you already have then explaining to the reconsideration representative. Also know, Barclaycard has been known to close line of credits that are not active.

Bottom Line

Barclaycard is not the easiest bank to be approved by, but if you remain calm, are reasonable with the representatives, and follow the simple steps above, you are more likely to be approved! I would highly recommend calling the reconsideration line at 866.408.4064 sooner than later, jump-starting your credit card churning ability.

FYI Applied and got approved for the US airways card tried the miles and more and was told it needed further review.

rocky June 22, 2013 at 04:27 pm

I'd call the reconsideration line and explain to them why you need both carda. Even if your us card was approved for a cresit line of 5k ask tthemto split it between the two cards ;) good luck!

My credit application for a travel card from Barclays was denied yesterday.

I called the Recon line today. Rep asked me why there was high usage on couple of my cards, and why was I applied for another credit card recently. After convinced with my explanation, the card has been approved with 5K limit.

Thank you for the information provided here. It helped immensely.

Mags October 9, 2013 at 03:32 pm

Thanks so much for this post. I didn't even know reconsideration lines existed. I was rejected for a barclay card on Friday, called this number on Monday, and was approved without a problem. Makes me wonder why they rejected me in the first place.

Scott November 15, 2013 at 10:33 pm

Applied for NFL Extra Points card issued by Barclays. Got denied with 704 FICO (TU) and 685 (EQX and EXP). Initially, it said they did not have enough information and to wait 10 business days for a decision. I immediately clicked on the 'check status' link and got the denial.

Credit Karma says 640 is the average score approved for this card, and I have seen people with scores below 600 report getting $1000 limits with this card.

Will call reconsideration line on Monday....

Mac November 20, 2013 at 03:22 pm

Well I have to tell you I just got off the phone with the reconsideration number above and was told that I'm declined. The rep. told me that I haven't use credit in a long time. I explained I paid cash for my car and motorcycle and didn't need to use credit after a nasty divorce and just wanted one to get back on the grid. He told me there is nothing he could do for me and also told me that these forums do not have any reliable information that one should go by. Just my two cents!

rocky November 20, 2013 at 03:27 pm

@marc thats why it says likely in the above article. You are NOT guaranteed to be approved and no where do I say that. If your credit score is bad you definitely will not be approved.

AC January 6, 2014 at 01:53 pm

Thanks a lot Rocky. Before stumbling upon your blog post I did not even know that this reconsideration line ever exists. Last week Barclay had rejected the arrival worldcard - I called in today, followed your advices and its approved now. She moved half of credit line from my other Barclaycard to the arrival and created the new credit line. Thanks again for the awesome post.

FT January 6, 2014 at 03:13 pm

Thank you so much for posting this! My application was denied this week because my credit took a hit from an accidental delinquency. I was searching around for a way to recover my credit or reapply only to discover that reconsideration exists! I called and explained my case and was approved for a 5k limit immediately.

This may not work for everyone but it's certainly worth trying. Thanks!

Steph January 20, 2014 at 11:12 am

Thanks so much for this article! My husband applied and had been declined so I applied not understanding why we wouldn't be offered credit. Like his had, my status showed that my application was being reviewed. However, I called the recon line not wanting to receive the same answer. I was granted a 5,000.00 line within 5 minutes of the conversation. We had a short sale on our credit over three years ago and they wanted to know why. Also, we have a higher balance on one card that was easy to explain. They were very friendly and eager to help. I suggest having your income information on hand as they will want to review that with you. Good luck!

Will March 25, 2014 at 03:48 am

I'm surprised that they could only see the information from three months prior as it should automatically update immediately after another application.

deejayspop April 30, 2014 at 08:11 am

I applied for Barclays rewards card and was approved in 2 days with a 682 FICO , then I saw the NFL card and decided to apply for that because of the cash back features, I got a 30 day notice like the last one which was only a week ago, I don't even have the card yet, so I will wait until the end of the week ( this is Wed)and then I will call on Friday PM.Hopefully they will approve me

@dee Dont wait. The sooner you call tje better your chances for approval are. By friday you may be denied already.

salemselva May 26, 2014 at 12:45 pm

Hi Rocky, thank you very much dude, my application got approved for $5000 after calling the reconsideration line. Yesterday, I applied for Barclay's Arrival Card and it said my application needs further review and it may take 10 business days like that. Then I called the direct number 866.408.4064 today because they open only Mon to Fri 8am to 5pm EST and it took around 8 mins for them to approve my card. They asked my some basic details that's it.

Thanks again for your helpful post. Keep up your good work.

lola June 6, 2014 at 06:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a barclays' credit card with a 0% balance transfer with a credit line of $4000 which I have already used. I have other accounts that I wish to transfer balance from. My question is this: I heard barclays would close an account if they realize that the holder of the account has applied for a new credit line at another bank. Is this true? I am quite worried. I'd be grateful if someone could answer me.

Claire July 7, 2014 at 03:42 pm

I had been declined three days ago and I called them today. I am EXP702 1 inq/TU698 with 2 inq, the 2nd one being Barclays/EQ714 no inq. Never ever been late. 16 years of credit history. I have too much of revolving credit. I explained I have a very low APR on all of my cards (between 3.99% and 5.99%) and it just doesn't make sense to pay all of them down. I applied for US Airways. No luck. Just my two pennies.

If you have a barclays card already ask them to reallocate credit. This always work for me. Never before has barclays allowed me to have more than 2 or 3 cards, but will allow me to reallocate the credit I have with them in order to keep the available credit with them the sa e.

Paul July 11, 2014 at 07:32 pm

I don't want a new card, I just want to see if I can transfer CL from an unused card to my Arrival card. Anyone had luck doing that?

@Paul - Yes, call barclays and tell them you want to transfer your credit before closing your account. Tehy will do this for you

Paul July 12, 2014 at 01:36 am

Thanks for the tip

Renee' July 27, 2014 at 06:11 pm

I applied for a barclaycard 2 weeks ago and got the denial letter Saturday. It said I was denied for insufficient credit cards . I applied for a credit one card the same day and got approved. TU 603. Should I call them to see if they would reconsider, or leave it alone. I have 4 inquiries, including barclaycard.

@renee it never hurts to call. I always recommend calling instead of waiting for the denial letter. It may be to late now.

Persephone August 2, 2014 at 10:12 pm

I think the information given here is helpful but not entirely accurate. Yes, you could call immediately and inquire about the status but as someone who previously worked for a banking agency I can tell you that calling before you receive a letter or confirmation of any kind also could be construed as desperation. Depends on the type of representative who answers the line. Also I see many times "don't wait for the denial letter it may be too late", that's misleading. When you receive the denial letter you can request a reconsideration by writing or via phone within 30 days which wont result in another HP on your report. Personally, I suggest writing a letter of explanation rather than calling. Its convenient and easy to call but explaining your situation clearly in a letter and countering any denial reasons in black and white shows serious interest. Just my two cents. Good luck all!

@Persephone I would totally disagree with your statement. By calling in you can answer any questions the bank may have live and then get aprroved. Common questions I've recieved while calling in, would you like to reshuffle credit? and Why do you want this card? if there's any negative marks on your credit history or any other issues you may not be able to answer the bank via a letter and not only are you delaying getting the card of your liking but you are more likely to get denied. The phone numbers are there for a reason use them!

Persephone August 2, 2014 at 10:26 pm

@Rocky you are certainly entitled to your opinion but like mine it is merely that, an opinion. Nowhere did I state calling in is not an option. I simply laid out the reasons why it may not be the best tactic for everyone. You're speaking as a consumer and that's fine. But I'm speaking as someone who actually picked up the phone and asked those very questions as well as someone who worked with individuals who did the same all day long. Again I will state that this delay you refer to is not accurate. Your application remains active for 30 days. Whether you call on day 10 or send a letter on day 20 you will still have the same odds for approval. So you can continue to give your opinion which I respect but having worked in the industry it certainly isn't the full story. I cant tell you how many people I've seen get an instant denial bc they chose to call not even 5 minutes after a further processing message appeared. Sorry but it often reeks of desperation especially if your credit situation isn't exactly excellent.

@Persephone: Speaking from experience, in my lifetime being approved for 7 american express card, 8 chase, 3 capitol one, 4 barclays cards, 1 discover, and more, and receiving the "pending further review page" a number of time, I have always been approved by calling. So as this is my blog and I this is my experience, I will tell my readers what I know. Thank you for your 2 cents. I am willing to believe though that you are one of those phone representatives that you describe above....and since the application is valid for 30 days like you say, I say HUCA and YMMV :)

Thomas August 13, 2014 at 03:01 pm

Thank God Persephone is a "former" emplyee!! And from my experience, I definitely recommend calling in immediately also.

Raychel September 25, 2014 at 03:52 pm

Rocky, thank you so much. I applied after hesitating for months and go the dreaded under review. I found your website after searching for tips, called recon and they gave me a 1000.00 limit. I am slowly rebuilding and finally I am getting cards with rewards. Thank you so much for your help. I agree call immediately!!!!

Kathryn September 26, 2014 at 05:00 pm

Hi Rocky, I followed your advice and got approved for a very low limit Discover IT card. That's okay as I have had a rough credit issue due to two periods of long unemployment (recessions). So even getting the reconsideration and having the guy allow me to explain why I have a spotty record was awesome. I can always try and get the limit increased in six months and keep improving my credit history. Thank you so much!

J in Atlanta October 18, 2014 at 07:45 am

Thanks so much for the information. I applied for the Travelocity American Express yesterday, and received the "application is under review" notice. I immediately called the number listed for the reconsideration line, and they were very nice. I was instantly approved for $3200, but politely asked for a higher limit. I asked for $10k, and the credit rep approved me for $7.5k. Really worked out well. Thanks so much for the help!!

Peter November 1, 2014 at 12:33 am

I applied 2 days ago for the arrival world MC then I got the reviewing answer. Luckily know the recon number. I called then he approved me for only $1000. I was so disappointed I asked him oh he can increase it. He said he can't. I just got the card today. Do you think I shoyld call and ask for a higher limit ??

rocky November 1, 2014 at 04:52 am

@Peter use the card for a few months then ask for a credit limit increase. this way the see you are responsible and pay your bills on time.

stacy November 5, 2014 at 11:12 am

A couple of days ago I applied for a cli through the automated system it said it would take 24hr. And they will send out a letter within 10 days. I called this morning to see if I was approved and got denied. They said that the account was to new. I then call the number listed above and spoke with the credit department who said the same, that my card was opened in May and they had to see me using it for a while. It was a try hopefully soon. Thanks for the information it's greatly appreciated

RayInQueens February 23, 2015 at 09:56 am

I took your advice, it didn't work. Oh well.

Turned down for Barclaycard Ring with 704 TransUnion FICO

danny March 14, 2015 at 12:50 am

I got the rewards card back in November. Had a rough patch a few years ago but been rebuilding. I have 3 Cap 1, BofA Americard and a few others. Cap 1 raised ask of my cards after I requested the increase 500, 1000 and 2000. BofA increased by 2500 from 1000 to 3500 (that's exactly what I asked for).

I have a while lot of inquires. Most of them came from buying 2 card where the dealership sent my app to different banks then after 10 months I got an offer to refinance for lower APR and monthly payment but that company was a broker and submitted to a lot of different banks so I got a ton of inquires.

I apped for a lot of card which I got most approved like store cards like amazon, walmart, target, macys and Nordstrom.

I was thinking about either getting anothe Barclay card or asking for an increase but not sure if I should try

My main reason for so many cards is that different forums and sites like credit karma and credit sesame would always indicate that I didn't have enough account and needed a bigger mix.

I also have a few cards with high apr's, annual fees and low limits which I want to replace with better options but don't want to shut then down until I can get some better cards with decent limits.

Do you think I should apply for a new Barclay card, request more credit or wait if they will do an auto increase?

@Danny - there's no harm in requesting a credit increase. But if all you have is credit cards, credit karma etc will always tell you that you don't have enough accounts/long enough credit history. Until you have a mix of credit cards, student loans, cars loans, home loans, you'll most likely continue to have this issue.

Instead pay off your credit cards in full and let the application rests. The inquiries fall off after 2 years. Unless your credit score is above the 700 range I would hold off from applying for more.

smooch March 22, 2015 at 02:30 am

@Rocky I applied for a Carnival card through Barclay's but was denied last month. I found out there was an error on my report that has now been corrected but I've also applied and received a few store cards. Should I call for recon or reapply? My concern is for the # of inquires. My credit is relatively new with student and car loan, TU score 652. Appreciate any advice.

@Smooch - if it has been more than 30 days since you applied for the card, I believe you have to reapply, I could be wrong though, as I am not a credit counselor or expert. I do know though the average approval rating for this card is 675 w/ the lowest approval of 583. So you are within the range and just slightly below average. You can call the reconsideration line and explain the situation. After al a call never hurt anyone.

Kia March 27, 2015 at 03:00 pm

Thank you for your advice! I have been checking everyday since my application has been in review. I believe I was on the 6th business day of the 10 business day review. I literally called the reconsideration line 10 minutes ago and they approved me. I was also able to get them to overnight it to me (for a fee, of course) since I'm making a big purchase in the next few days that would qualify me for the bonus points. Thanks again!!!

What is Barclay's phone number to call to move credit around from card to another?

Raymond Pearson September 24, 2015 at 02:12 pm

I applied for a Barclays card yesterday & I did not get the “instant Approval” I called this special department; I Ironed out the details and got approved. I’m pleased I could contact them & explain things.

It worked out great!

Rocky September 24, 2015 at 07:31 pm

@michael, call the number on the back of the card they will be able to help

061 March 1, 2016 at 06:27 am

I've recently started to build my credit with a Kohls charge card and a horrible auto loan. The charge card is 8 months old with 300 cl. The auto loan is 6 or 7 months old.

Not sure what my fico score is but credit karma has my tu at 617. So I'm on my way but have a far way to go.

I thought after extensive reading maybe they'd give me a chance with this unsecured card. Others got it with lower tu score so why not try.

Got the 7-10 business days message... Called the recon line and explained the message I was given and asked if I could answer any questions or present any additional information in an attempt to expedite the decision making process.

The gentlemen was very polite and told me I was denied. I asked if he would be willing to review and possibly reconsider said decision. He obliged and was very nice.

He said my lack of credit history was the largest determining factor.

I said may I address that? He said yes. I explained that in previous years I didn't understand the importance of credit and typically made purchases with cash. But as I'm getting older I realize the significance of and the role of credit in life. I explained I started taking steps to build my credit by opening a Kohls card and then getting an auto loan and I'd appreciate the opportunity to have another open account so that I may continue on my path to building a credit profile. I acknowledged that my history is limited and I understand how this hinders my effort to attain additional credit at this time. I said all I'm asking for is an opportunity to add another tool to help me on my journey to build a sound credit profile.

I explained that I wasn't desperate for the card and had no immediate pressing need but that I wanted to use it for gasoline and everyday expenses. The amount of the credit limit was unimportant to me and I would be satisfied even with a 250 $ limit as it would provide great value just being another open account and helping with my utilization rate. I asked that he noted my current utilization rate was low and that typically it is 0 percent, but explained that if I use my current card just once it raises my taste significantly....

Blah blah blah. I really layed it on thick always staying calm and polite. He was very understanding and empathetic but still wouldn't budge.

I thanked him for the opportunity to present my case and for his patience in hearing me out. The call was almost over. I said sir I'm curious to know if a supervisor would be in a position to further reconsider my request. He politely fetched a lady supervisor.

I immediately thanked her for her time and willingness to speak with me. I told her the previous rep was very polite and did a great job explaining Barclay's position but that I was hoping to borrow some of her time in an effort to be further considered for approval regarding my application.

She was friendly and listened to everything I had to say. She noted my on time payments and low util rate and was impressed with my appeal ........

HOWEVER.... I agree with the decision blah blah blah. But seriously she was cool and gave me advice (nothing I didn't know already).... I will say these people were so so nice and seemed to be empathetic. Probably the best customer service ever honestly and I'm saying that having been denied! Twice!

I'm thankful for this article and the advice to try. I just have to let my accounts age I guess. Or get a secured card * sad face*

I've never destroyed my credit before. I just don't have any lol. You can't get none unless you got some... Wtf is that about anyway...

Not sure if I should get another store card or two or just let this one continue to age and use responsibly

Rob March 23, 2016 at 11:32 am

Thanks for the phone line and tip!!! I was a Barclay customer for three years with a $500 limit and no CL increase. Others lenders have my limits at $8,650 and $5,500. Applied for a CL increase with Barclay today via phone and was declined. I called the number you offered and spoke with a credit analyst. After a few questions they raised my CL up to $2,000. Lesson learned again, it never hurts to ask for a reconsideration!!! Thanks again!

GEE April 6, 2016 at 01:00 pm

Rocky, thanks for the advice. I was on the fence about calling the recon number as I got the 7-10 day response this morning. I found your blog and called the same day of getting the manual review message. I got approval after answering some general questions (verifying info on the app) and gave reason behind a collection on a card from last year. I wasn't looking for much as I'm rebuilding my credit and was approved for $500.00. Do yourself a favor and call them. My rep was very nice and willing to help. Thanks again Rocky for making the reconsideration information known.

Donna April 14, 2016 at 11:57 am

Thanks for the advice. I applied on Monday and got the "under further review" answer online. I saw this forum and decided to call the reconsideration line. I'm glad I did, after a few minutes I was approved for Barclay's Carnival MasterCard for $5,000. Thanks again!!!!

Tiffany April 29, 2016 at 11:20 pm

Thanks for the tips Rocky! I applied for the Carnival MasterCard last night and received the 7-10 day notification. Today I called the number you provided, politely answered a few additional questions regarding my credit history and was approved!!!

Ron July 28, 2016 at 02:48 am

I had to comment...

Rocky, man, I owe you!

A few days back, I applied and got approved for Barclay's Rewards card. However, what I really wanted to do was transfer a balance from another credit card. After some easy research, I didn't know Barclay had a balance transfer card. So, what the heck, let me apply for that too! However, with this app, I was told that due to my recent open acct., I'd be under a 30 day review. I took that as a denial. So, I thought I'd Google something along the lines of 'Barclay app. 30 day review'.... Again, this is earlier today when I got the 'you'll hear from us in 30 days'. My Google search brought me here.

What? I didn't know I could call them back. Where's that number again? Hey, what do I have to lose?

I called the number Rocky listed a few paragraphs from the top. A gal answered. I informed her that I just rec'd a new card from her company and that I was very happy about it. However, what I really was wanting was a card designed to benefit transfer balances. However, I told her, now I'm concerned about my '30 day review' deal, and that I thought I'd call to see if I could answer any concerns they had. She verified me then informed me that the concern was my annual income was high for being retired, so they needed time to verify it. I explained my income and she put me on hold then came back with an approval.

So, Rocky's advice and the people who've replied in this thread are legit. If you've been put on notice, or even declined, make the call. It won't hurt you. I was polite with this gal, she was very kind with me, a very pleasant experience. And, if I were declined, I would've respected that and asked what I could do to better my chances. But, all that wasn't necessary, for me.

Thank you Rocky, and others for sharing your experiences!

Congratulations to us all, and let's not screw up our credit! LOL.
