2013: Year in Review

2013 has been an exciting year for me, and I am fortunate that I once again had the chance to travel quite a bit! I graduated from college in May, and immediately went to work at trying to maintain my status while also working full-time.
90% of my travel in 2013 was for leisure, while the ...

2013 in review- a lot of Regionals, but some First too

It is nearly 2014, which means it is time to reflect on the past year, and look ahead to the what the new year may bring.  It also means the counters reset for elite status qualification (argh!)
Here is my flight map from 2013.
Obviously much of my flying was domestic for ...

Review: Park Hyatt Baku

Other than its barrage of CNN advertisements, you don't hear too much about Azerbaijan. When you do, it is usually a story encouraging investment by heralding the country's favorable interest rates and stable government or perhaps a blurb on the continuing tension with Armenia. But there is ...

Review: Andaz San Diego

A recent business trip brought me to San Diego, and while I usually stay at the W Gaslamp or the Sheraton in Mission Valley, I figured it was time to start shifting some stays over to Hyatt. I looked online, and I found an Andaz downtown. I had never stayed at an Andaz before, and I was excited to ...

Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond benefits and service delivery

This is definitely a 'First World problem'.  I don't need any of these benefits, but I often write here about loyalty programs and it can be frustrating when benefits are promised and not delivered.

The Hyatt Gold Passport program gets generally deserved high ...

Hyatt Regency Sha Tin (Hong Kong) - Life is Much Better as a Diamond Member

My previous post reviewed the Radisson Martinique Manhattan in New York which was nice, and a suite that was more than adequate, but falls short of expectations for the price paid.  When planning our trip around the world, I came across Mike's post about requesting a Diamond Challenge for ...

A pleasant surprise from Hyatt

Yesterday I received an email from Hyatt which surprised me.  A few weeks ago I was in Chicago and to work towards my Diamond renewal opted to do some hotel hopping.  So in the midst of this, I happened to stay at a new Hyatt and this marked my 50th Hyatt property that I stayed at.  In honor of this momentus occasion, Hyatt granted me a free night usable at any Hyatt worldwide.  Definitely a nice perk and one I didn't expect.  I wonder what my 100th Hyatt will bring...

Hyatt Place

In completing the Hyatt Diamond challenge, I've spent my share of nights at several different Hyatt Place properties. Hyatt Place, for those that haven't stayed there, is Hyatt's inexpensive franchise that feature the same building layout at each location. Almost all rooms feature a split studio ...

Review: Park Hyatt Jeddah

Transiting through Jeddah on my way to Afghanistan, I had about 23 hours in Saudi Arabia between Saudia flights. A transit visa had been granted by the Saudi Embassy in Washington, DC and without even looking at other properties, I reserved a room at the Park Hyatt Jeddah.
This isn't the ...

Review: Park Hyatt Istanbul - Maçka Palas

Much has changed since my last vacation to Istanbul. Five years earlier, I journeyed to the crossroads of east and west for the first time with my younger brother. We had a great time, though our accommodation—a small hostel in the Sultanahmet district—left much to be desired. ...

A stay at the Grand Hyatt Kauai - Escape to Hawaii

After our stay at the Sheraton Maui, we made our way to the airport for the quick flight to Kauai.  We had 5 nights on the island, and ultimately decided to split our time between the Grand Hyatt on the south side and the St. Regis in Princeville.

Our one previous stay on Kauai ...

Upgraded to a Parlor Suite at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare

Despite the fact that I live less than 100 miles from O'Hare, I do occasionally stay in hotels near there, in the case of a very early flight or irregular operations.
I've had a few stays at the rather unique looking Hyatt Regency O'Hare recently.  In both cases I was ...

Review: Hyatt 48 Lex - Manhattan

On a recent visit to New York City, I was left with a bit of a challege to determine where to stay. Hyatt has five properties scattered through the city, with another one opening later this year.
Although the Andaz properties were enticing (I'll have a report on the Andaz 5th Ave shortly), the ...
