The Power of the Star Alliance..

A bit random.. but I'm sitting in the Scandinavian (SAS) Lounge, in Brussels, getting access with my Continental Airlines status, flying Brussels airlines on a ticket purchased from British Midland International (bmi), getting mileage credited to my UNITED account.. Got to love the power of the Star Alliance.

It is rare that an airline reinstates complimentary amenities for passengers, especially those behind the curtain. Yet British Midland International (bmi) plans to bring reintroduce hot food to premium economy and economy classes starting August 17th:

I Miss Frankfurt Airport as My Neighbor

After 5 years living in Germany, I have recently moved to Northern England and this would be the reason for my lack of posting here on UPGRD. Now that life is getting back to normal, I have all my stuff and most importantly I have started to travel and plan to travel again.
After living just 15 ...

Triple Award Miles Offer on British Midland

While I have soured to British Midland's (bmi) Diamond Club program due to the excessive fuel surchages that are tacked onto award bookings, I concede that their award chart itself remains attractive. I still recommend crediting to United, Continental, or US Airways if you are flying on Star ...

Did I Get Shafted by Lufthansa and British Midland?

My Iran story is not quite over: there remained the unresolved matter of my ticket back to Europe on Lufthansa. If you did not read about my adventure in Iran, an overbooked flight back from Kish Island to Dubai forced an unplanned overnight in Iran and a missed connection back to Frankfurt (and on ...

British Midland Yanks Star Alliance Silver Status from New Members

Last week, I blogged about British Midland (bmi) offering free Star Alliance Silver status to new members of their Diamond Club program. Apparently, that offer was not meant for everyone.
James, a reader of this blog, just forwarded me the following e-mail he received from ...

[Not Honored]Instant Star Alliance Silver Status via BMI!

UPDATE: BMI sent a rather severely worded email earlier this week saying they would not honor this offer.

BMI also has some very attractive award redemption options.  Now they're offering instant *A Silver elite status - just for signing up.  I'm not sure how long this offer ...

1,000 bmi Diamond Club Miles for Completing Brief Survey

Although the offer appears targeted, take a moment to fill out a brief survey from bmi. It only takes about two minutes so even if you get passed over for the 1,000 Diamond Club miles, it is worth the small time investment to give it a shot.

In the survey, I urged bmi to bring to back service to Chicago and Las Vegas. Somehow, I think my request will fall upon deaf ears.

British Midland's Disgusting Award Surcharges

British Midland's (bmi) Diamond Club award program boasts on its home page, "Free airmiles. Free flights." After forking out over £1,100 (~$1,800) in taxes and surcharges for two business class tickets, I think it is an insult and a lie to call award redemptions on bmi ...

bmi kills London-Glasgow route adds others.

British Midland International (bmi) will suspend its seven daily flights between London Heathrow and Glasgow from March 27.

Why I Won't Credit Any More Flights to British Midland

The news that Air Canada is restricting elite status to those who fly at least 10,000 miles on Air Canada metal got me thinking about my habit of crediting 38K miles each year to British Midland (bmi).
Even before Lufthansa (bmi's parent company) announced plans to devalue its award ...

Air Canada's Aeroplan Restricts Elite Qualification

As Nick blogged about earlier today, Air Canada and Aeroplan have modified their elite qualification requirements. Starting next year, travelers crediting to Aeroplan need to fly at least 10,000 miles or five segments on Air Canada metal in order to qualify for elite status--of any level.

Using a Flight Delay to Your Advantage

While most of the traveling public dreads the announcement that their flight is delayed, I usually welcome such announcements.
To be sure, delays are not always a great thing. My Los Angeles-Las Vegas United flight was delayed yesterday by 2.5 hours, ruining my evening plans and my trip to ...
