Matthew live and let's fly

Scott McCartney has a decent Middle Seat column today in the WSJ on how to maximize your chances to redeem frequent flyer miles.

A couple sections particularly caught my eye:

On the airline side, road warriors suggest checking alliance Web sites—StarAlliance.com, oneWorld.com and SkyTeam.com—that show flights on partner airlines that may not be displayed on your own airline's booking site. Those partner airlines may have award seats available, but you'll need to ...

A few months ago I purchased a US Airways Power-Nap Sack (overnight kit) on a redeye flight from LAS-PHL. It cost $7 and included:

The only reason I bought it was for the neck pillow and I did find the pillow useful in aiding my slumber on the flight ...

Do you ever sit down on an airplane and hear your own voice coming from the flight deck?

Note the original $1243 a/i price for this fare, which booked tickets into First Class on Qantas codeshares. I am usually really good at monitoring the Mileage Run Deals forum on flyertalk and have taken advantage of quite a few "sale" fares the last three years. The last time I was on a US Airways dinner flight, I was offered this dismal meal.

Last night, I flew on US Airways in First Class from Washington Dulles to Phoenix and was impressed with the dinner service. Although I was not addressed by name or served hot nuts, the salmon was tasty, the salad was good, and the pie was fresh and light.

It is not often I have the chance to compliment US Airways, so I felt last night's meal was worthy of special mention. Service wasn't bad either on the IAD-PHX flight and PHX-BUR flights.
