Sky Priority: Thanks for Nothing

So I get an e-mail today about Delta's Sky Priority - and I'm glad I wasn't expecting anything new.  Here's the list of benefits:

  • Faster Check-in: Access dedicated check-in areas at the airport to help you move through the process faster.
  • Accelerated Security: Walk through expedited security lines at select airports so you can get on your way as soon as possible.
  • Highest Boarding Priority: Board in Zone 1, so you can enter first to secure the best overhead bins or take your seat at your leisure—the choice is yours.
  • Expedited Baggage Service: Have your bags delivered first to the carousel so you can head home or to your next meeting with no delay.
  • Exclusive Reservation Line: Access an elite team of personal representatives, available 24/7 when you call the number on the back of your Medallion credentials.
  • Additional Benefits: Earn coupons for checking in online, enjoy earlier access to exit rows and forward cabin seats, and use priority lanes at Baggage Service Offices and Need Help Centers.

The only thing that looks new is that there will now be a free for all during Zone 1 boarding.  That's going to be a lot of fun - when 100+ people are boarding in Zone 1 in Atlanta.  I already have a dedicated check-in area, faster security lines, priority baggage, a dedicated phone line, etc.

What am I really getting here?

You get a free drink if you miss the elite upgrade, provided you do online check-in.

Strangely, that's the only real benefit, yet it was not in the email but rather buried in the fine print.

A poor job of communications.

I wonder whether this is not a cut of benefits in disguise. Silver Medallion members currently receive most of the "new" benefits, but they are excluded from Sky Priority. Does this mean that in the future they will have to line up with the ordinary folks for check-in and boarding?

In re: the Silver Medallion crowd, they got thrown under the bus. The good news for the FO's though, is at least in Atlanta and SFO, there is a check-in for FO and SkyTeam Elite, and it looks like they still get boarding priority.
