Last week news started breaking out that US Airways has buy-in from the American Airlines (AA) unions to support a merger of the two airlines.

Not accepting denial from the first attempt, Delta and US Airways announced they are reattempting their slow swap, albeit with different terms.

The new proposal has Delta giving US Airways 42 slot pairs at DC National, $65.6 million in cash and rights for flights to Sao Paulo, Brazil.  In exchange, US Airways is giving Delta 132 slot pairs at LaGuardia.

A few months ago I was tipped off by a friend of a really cool mileage redemption.  Apparently, US Airways considered Russia part of North Asia.  (US recently adjusted its redemption chart so Russia is no longer part of North Asia).  From a strictly geographical standpoint, they were right.  From an airline perspective, it required any redemptions from Russia to North Asia to traverse Europe, the Middle East or South Asia.

Well it appears that Delta and US Airways have given up on attempting to slot swaps at LaGuardia and Reagan National.  The deal was originally announced almost a year ago and has been the subject of heavy scrutiny by the government and other airlines.   The deal was also being fought by US Airways pilots union as it was going to mean the closure of another base.

As expected, the Department of Transporation has put restrictions on the proposed slot swap between Delta and US Airlines and LaGuardia and DC National.

Both airlines were told they can engage in slot swaps if they divest some of their current slot allocations.   The DOT has requested that the airlines divest 14  pairs of slots  at National and 20  at LaGuardia.  Assuming the airlines aren't willing to divest additional slots then ...

 

Back in November I posted about an incident I had with US Airways and the initial follow-up. 

Having made no progress with the "normal" channels, I decided to escalate and sent an email to John Romantic, Director of Customer Service.  A few hours later I was contacted by someone from his office, lets call her Jenn.
