Getting tough on airline food

 

New York senator Chuck Schumer has decided that it is time to crack down on airline food quality.  Recently there has been some disclosure about the sanitary conditions of certain airline kitchens. 

According to a USA Today article, current fines against health code violations are $1000 per incident.  Schumer is proposing a $50,000 per incident fine. 

While I'm all for clean kitchens and properly processed food, levying such stiff fines could cause an additional burden on airline catering, which in turn impacts the very people he is attempting to protect -- paying passengers. 

I am surprised that the state of New York is currently going through a fiscal crisis and Schumer is worried about airline catering.  Schumer has voiced his opinion on other airline issues in the past, often with no real basis other then wanting some attention, so this really shouldn't be of much surprise.

When you say "...could cause an additional burden on airline catering, which in turn impacts the very people he is attempting to protect -- paying passengers," what kind of burden do you mean? That airlines would spend more to keep the kitchens sanitary, and that increase could be passed on to the customer?

I'm not familiar with the recent disclosures, so I'm speaking purely hypothetically, but it would seem on the surface to not cost airlines too much to fix whatever problems might be going on.

@gluedtothewindow: The issue is compliance, be it corporate, government or any other type, drives up the costs of anything due to all the oversight and policies that get instituted. So, not only do the files go up, but because the fines are substantial amounts, more people are needed to police the activities. At the end of it all, the costs get passed on to customers.
