Aloft Brooklyn Finally Opens!

Aloft Brooklyn Finally Opens!

When booking my hotel for NYC last week, I was pumped to see the Aloft Brooklyn finally opened!  The much anticipated June 9th opening marked the 42nd Aloft in the United States. The Aloft is truly "A Vision of W Hotel" without the W price tag. This property is no exception.

Located in downtown Brooklyn, the 176-room Aloft is in the heart of local action and two subway stops away from Manhattan. The modern loft-like rooms are a steal with an average price of $150/night before taxes. It is the best priced Starwood hotel with five miles of downtown NYC.  All the Aloft trademarks are present: re:fuel in the lobby with various snacks and beverages; re:charge for those looking to pump some iron; and w xyz bar to indulge in an adult beverage and some wasabi peanuts after a long day. The lounging areas are split between the lobby and the mezzanine. On the mezzanine level you will find the re:charge gym, which looks out to the rooftop terrace and shared indoor pool with the Sheraton. The rooms are standard Aloft rooms, minimalist and efficient, with a touch of high-tech integration including a 42' LCD TV and FREE wireless internet.  The hotel is conveniently located within blocks of all the main subway lines into the city. They also have self-parking in a private lot across the street for $25/day, which is incredibly reasonable.  With three weeks under their belt, it exceeded my expectations for the price and location.

It took me a week to realize the local area isn’t that bad.  Fulton Street next to the hotel is home to Fulton Mall, which is a lot less mall, a lot more flea market stores and guys bootlegging CD’s on the corner. Then a front desk employee told me about Smith Street just a few blocks south.  Minus the Brooklyn jail, the street is full of awesome shopping and restaurants.  Now that I know the local area spots I’m excited about coming back to Brooklyn every night.

Considering the length of time the hotel has been opened they seem to have things together. An employee told me they are still ironing out some kinks, including being overbooked almost every day. They plan on having live entertainment and events at the w xyz bar like the other Alofts’, along with opening a 24th floor rooftop bar by the end of the month.  Additionally, they are one of three Starwood hotels testing out a new “Smart Check-In” system using an RFID reader in your cell phone.  Select SPG members will test out the system in the coming months.  Once they finally get organized this is likely to be one of the best Aloft properties yet!
