I remember when steak came back to the MD80s last year and I had one of first ones (that got posted about on FT). I was very surprised at how good it was.
I don't eat steak on domestic flights for a few reasons:
(1) I actually love steak, and airplane steak always blows. It's never a decent cut of meat, it's never properly seared, and it's always poorly cooked (see below) and presented.
(2) No steak knives means that cutting the steak with a butter knife (and then totally mushing up the meat and destroying it).
(3) Because it has to be pre-prepared, airplane steak is always overcooked. A proper piece of meat should never be cooked past medium (or even medium rare).
@Josh - I think your comments need some context. This is not some famous steakhouse, but a 1980s era MD80.
I've had the steak several times, and although slightly overcooked, it was well seasoned and a much better choice than the alternate. If you want to eat more mushy pasta or whatever else, be my guest. ;)
@Mike - That's the whole point. I don't eat steak often because I'm a steak snob. Pretty much the only time I have a steak is at a steak house where I know the steak is good and I know that it's been properly prepared. (Or I can at least send it back if it's not.)
So I don't bother with steak on domestic airplanes. I'd always rather the mushy pasta (which is at least flavorful, has a decent amount of cheese, and doesn't require me to saw at it with a dull knife) over that crappy steak.
@Josh - Yeah, you are a snob.
Yeah! More steak for me!
Sounds like we need to share flights more often, with complementary meal preferences.
