Elysethe inflight dish

On a brief layover in Houston, I was feeling inspired by the passenger on my inbound flight who hauled her own DIY full service meal onboard. With no chance of an upgrade on my connecting flight, my tray table and I were on our own.

Someday I'll sample the airline's new meals-for-purchase menu, but I couldn't risk spoiling my appetite enroute to Miami. I was traveling in full foodie-anticipation mode, heading to an event at the annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival. I'd have to save Continental's famous "cheeseburger" experience for another day.

While passing time at the airport, I dropped into the President's Club lounge to check my email. Here's where the genius idea came to me. Airport lounges are virtual snack factories, supplying the traveling elite with unlimited munchies for pre-flight grazing. Using the materials at hand, I could assemble my own cheese and cracker platter and save myself $$$ to boot. Not wanting to fall into the messy/gross pax category, I stepped up my DIY inflight catering by also snagging a plate, napkins and plastic cutlery.

21D must have been drooling over my Peppercorn Parmesan spread, because he ordered Continental's "Select Snack Box" which contains the exact same tub of spread. The only difference was that he shelled out $7.95 for his sodium fix. Also, I think my plate was prettier.

lol, "Filed under: cheese, crackers" I didn't realize upgrd.com had a "cheese" and "crackers" section.

Great post - you're lucky to be flying an airline that has cheese and crackers in the lounge. Any American Airlines Admirals club would probably only have cookies until at least 4pm in the afternoon.

I REALLY hope the merged CO/UA club takes the President's Club approach to packaged snacks! Nicely done & well plated. :-)
