American Airlines Launches San Diego - Miami Non-stop

June 12, 2013 American Airlines initiated nonstop service from San Diego to Miami, reopening a route that has not been served in over 20 years! The relaunch of this route will not only connect point-to-point travelers, but open up a slew of markets via 1 stop to the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe via American’s mega hub in South Florida.

Flights are time perfectly for connections both ways, getting travelers into Miami early enough to catch an onward flight anywhere or perfect for a business meeting or a day at the beach for those not continuing past Miami. The same goes for the return flight from Miami, allowing business travelers to finish their meetings, or late enough for connecting traffic.

To celebrate this flight, American Air is offering Frequent fliers bonus points for travel. Registration is required, allowing AAdvantage members the possibility to earn triple miles for travel in First Class, or double miles for travel in the Main Cabin.

The celebration at San Diego included a slew of Cuban-American food, drinks, and cake along with a couple of speakers about the new service and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Although the best part of the launch of the new flight (other than the two free tickets the airline gave away to fliers) was the live music and dancer. I took a quick video for my friends and readers at upgrd. Honestly, if there were gate parties like this every day flying would be MUCH more enjoyable!

Great post! Did you get a chance to go to the airport to check out the launch? Thanks for documenting. AA has definitely been stepping up its MIA-transcon schedule this summer, venturing back into the MIA-SAN and MIA-SEA spaces. Obviously, filing for Ch. 11 has helped them lower their costs to pull off needed routes such as these!

Yes I went to the airport, saw the launch, took all those pictures/videos my self. The San Diego Airport is very much in love with AA/OneWorld and their partners right now. AA/AS/JAL/BA have all launched a TON of new flights from SAN in the last 2 years and the Board is working to secure more. It's interesting, Mr. Geary, the gentleman from the SAN Board was telling me in the last few years SAN has started to see connecting passengers thanks to the New AS transcon flights/Hawaii flights and the JAL/BA service. Something SAN has NEVER seen before!
