Earlier this week Alaska Air announced that a Q400 was painted in San Diego State University Aztec’s colors and would be deployed across the Alaska/Horizon route system on May 30, 2012. Today this plane was revealed at a ceremony at San Diego International Airport in front of a crowd made up of cheering students, alumni, faculty and travelers.

Jim Sterk, SDSU director of intercollegiate athletics, said "Eighty percent of San Diego State's 250,000 alumni live in California, so it will be a huge source of pride for them to see the Aztec colors flying through the sky and at our local airport."

The 76 passenger Q400 painted in the San Diego State University colors is the ninth university-themed aircraft flown by Horizon Air since 2008. For more details, read my post I wrote earlier in the week. A time-lapse video of the Q400 being painted with 32 gallons of white paint, 10 gallons of red paint and four gallons of black paint with an In additional 2,000 sheets of sandpaper and 10,000 yards of masking tape can be seen below.

Like all of Alaska Airlines flight the plane will be offered on a B737 and will offer all of Alaska’s well known services such as digEplayers for $10 (complimentary for first class) and Alaska’s Northern Bites (food).  Introductory fares start at just $169 each way and Alaska Mile Plans members can earn double miles on Flights Oct 11 – Nov 15.
