Review: SwissĂ´tel Tallinn, Estonia - Great Hotel

I had the privilege to return to Tallinn Estonia for the third time right before Christmas. I really like this city and it is quickly become a major tourist destination in northern Europe. When looking for a hotel in Tallinn you will notice the lack of any major international hotel brands, like Hilton or Marriott for example. Sure there is a few Radissons but I have never been a fan.

So this time I decided to try the Swissôtel brand for the first time. Swissôtel Hotels and Resorts is a group of hotels at the higher end of the hotel market. The chain currently includes 37 properties in 17 countries. Swissôtel was founded in 1980 as a joint venture between the Swissair and Nestlé groups. I have only heard good things about the hotels so I was excited to give them a try.

The Swissôtel Tallinn was opened in December of 2007, I was a guest at the hotel right around its five year anniversary. The hotel was still like new, the staff was great and it was a perfect stay. As they say you get what you pay for.

I have become used to having hotel executive lounge access as a perk from Hilton and Hyatt were I hold top tier status. As someone that was new to Swissôtel I held no status and did try to get a status match without any luck. So I did booked an executive room at this hotel to get the lounge access. Internet was free for any guest in the hotel no matter what type of room booked. With an executive room you get free Breakfast and at this hotel it is in the SwissCafe’. This was a full breakfast with made to order options; this was one of the best Hotel Breakfast I have ever had.

It was very clear at check in this hotel was a step above the rest. This Swissôtel reminded me of a very good Hyatt Hotel but a bit better. Many little things impressed me, like the staff with white cloth gloves serving you, the way I was always greeted by name and just the modern design.

The price for the executive room was high for Tallinn standards but compared to other European cities it was not out of line. It was hands down the best hotel in Tallinn. A true 5 star hotel and 5 star experience.

The lounge was very impressive, there was no Breakfast service in the lounge (was provided in the Swiss Café’) and it did not open till 11am, this was one minor drawback. I do like to grab a drink before heading out for the day. There was a “Lunch” service that included soup and sandwiches and other finger foods. Then a “Dinner” service, and it was Dinner! Three hot main dishes to pick from on the buffet in the lounge. Each of the three nights had something new, Pork, Fish, Beef, Chicken, Vegetables and more. It was very impressive. There was also an open bar at night. The staff in the lounge was the best and clearly took pride in their jobs. I was impressed with the upkeep of the food and drinks, it always looked like it was just set up. The lounge was a bit on the small side, it was only packed on the Friday night.

Room was a very nice size and had great bathroom. The view was really cool. Nothing was wrong at all with the room. The only thing I could be picky on was the older small TV.

So top marks from me! This hotel impressed on all levels, I will be sure to try out some of the other Swissôtel Hotels and Resorts around the world. It appears that this brand has clearly positioned themselves above the big boys and they really have a good product!

Also check out Tallinn if you can, it is a cool city to check out! The Christmas market was great!
