Today a Lufthansa A340-600 was at LHR performing LH4724/4725 from FRA-LHR and back. Normally an A321 runs the FRA-LHR route. Tomorrow a B747 will be heading to LHR. All this was done announced a week or so ago when BA was going to strike. But from what I’m told this could have not worked out better for LH, with all the weather problems in London and in Europe BA was over booked on most London – Main Land Europe flights. To make matters worse the EuroStar service has been down for days with over 55,000 people trying to get from the UK to main land Europe. I’m told LH targeted some of these stranded rail passengers outside London with cheap one-way fares on the LHR-FRA service. I was told by a co-worker who was in London trying to get to Zurich who was booked on a BA flight that was all jacked up due to weather he was rebooked on the LH A340-600 to FRA then onto Zurich on SWISS. Looks like what ever the reason LH put these wide-bodied jets on this route it did pay off for them. It would be nice to see more LH A340’s or B747 at LHR, even if they are in BMI colors.
On a side note, I was trying to fly from Budapest back home to Frankfurt on Sunday. My 7pm flight was delayed to 11pm. I was shocked to get a meal voucher for around $20 USD, the contracted lounge also stayed open to boarding, it was to close at 8pm. I did get back to FRA around 1230am Monday, but had to wait over an hour for my checked bag. Many people who had connections in FRA were overnighted in BUD, and were told there were no hotels in FRA and they would be put on flights on Monday. Many were also re-booked to MXP (Lufthansa Italia) and then re-routed from there. On board the A319 there was only 32 paxs. There were around 15 other very late arrivals into FRA with only one bag crew still on duty. During my wait I walked up to the check in area for LH, and there had to be 700 people in line. Looked like LH had a good size staff on hand, but with over 400 canceled flights at FRA on Sunday it did not look fun at all.
