Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort - A Review

hyattregencyphuket_logo Hyatt Regency Phuket is a 5 star resort recently built (partially re-built) on a hillside of Kamala, overlooking Rayee Beach which is south of the main Kamala beach. This 199 room resort offers wonderful sea views from almost every room and balcony.

I was lucky to spend my birthday evening at this 10378162_783187318400838_1810411440605204704_n great new hotel. The staff, the rooms, the property itself all what you would expect from a Hyatt. I do have to say the one thing that did stand out to me was the food! The quality and selection of the food was impressive. The food venues are managed by Chef Alessandro Martinelli; a northern Italian executive chef. This guy is good! He personally made my birthday dinner in the Sunset Grill located at one of the highest points of the resort with a wonderful view of the sea and resort below. The Sun Set grill has an open show kitchen that is found in many Hyatt hotels around the world. The menu had a good mix of seafood and grilled meats. I ordered a grilled pumpkin salad as a starter and New York Strip steak that was served with grilled garlic and vegetables as the main. Hands down one of the best steaks I have had. The steak was also served with hand cut steak frys!  It was a great meal! The hotel also surprised me with a nice birthday cake for dessert.

The other main food venue is the “Pool House” located more at sea level around the pool. This restaurant is open all day. Breakfast had a great variety of western, local and asian options. On our second night we had dinner at the Pool House, the Chef told us he makes his own dough and pizza at the hotel. It was just like Italy! It was a nice light dinner with a good German beer. I know this is Thailand but after many meals out, this was a great change. We found the food all around to be great and at a price that was also nice for a 5 star resort.

As for the rooms, they are nice, still with the brand new car smell. The hotel is a collection of buildings, some of them are renovated from a resort that once stood here and closed after the tsunami. The building with the peaked tops are the totally renovated buildings and the others are new built. I booked a club room with points for my stay, and was given a deluxe sea view club room. The room was a great size and a very nice layout. The bathroom was great. The most important thing the air conditioning in the room was amazing! They also provide a free good sized bottle of bug spray in the room along with a mosquito plug in repellent , a must have!

Our building was located around the Regency Club / Gym building and with the heat and the big incline taking the buggy to the room was almost a must.

The Regency Club was very nice with Breakfast, soft drinks and light foods all day, cocktails and a light meal at night. The offering is very nice. If you are a Hyatt Diamond you are allowed to take breakfast in the club or in the Pool House. I personally think the Pool House is the much better option. Both at breakfast and evening cocktail hours at the club there is a cook at the grill outside making eggs, bacon, etc in the AM. Each night they offered some different grilled items. The club has its own pool and outdoor area and one heck of a view. During the evening service it was nice to have the hotels room manager talking with the guest in the lounge each night.

I did not take part in any spa treatments but did take a tour of the treatment rooms and they are top notch for sure.

Some things to note:

The resort is built on a hillside so going up and down can be challenging for people with mobility issues. The hotel offers a very good and efficient buggy service that will take you up and down. The beach in front of the hotel is not great for swimming because it is mostly rocky. The hotel provides regular free shuttles to go to the main Kamala beach and city.

Over all:

I like this place, the food hands down was the highlight for me! The rooms were very nice and the staff and service were just as you would expect from a Hyatt. I did think the staff uniforms were a bit too relaxed however for a Hyatt. I also did find the Regency Club to get a bit crowded at peak times and the staff could not keep up with very demanding guest from China. It was like some of these people never had food before. It looks like this hotel takes care of the Hyatt Status members well. So a great new 5 start resort option in Phuket for sure!
