Review of the Hilton Mainz - After its Renovations

Hilton has two hotels in Mainz Germany, and the Hilton Mainz on the banks of the Rhine River is just about done a Multi-Million Euro refurbishment. The other Hilton in the City “The Hilton Mainz City” was renovated about 5 years ago. The changes are very dramatic! Here is a before and after of the main lobby:

I had the pleasure of staying in a brand new Jr. Suite at the Hilton Mainz. I was pleasantly surprised on the new look of this hotel, the hotel is now one of the most modern Hiltons in Germany, and they did it in a way to show off the local area. I love modern and clean looking hotels, but most of the time hotels forget to build some local personality and the hotel lacks anything special. The new look of the Hilton Mainz nailed it, the lobby and rooms are sleek and modern including some local touches to show off the local importance of Wine.

The carpeting in the hotels hallways are too look like different types of Grapes, the carpeting in the rooms look like the leaves on the vines.

The other unique and cool thing was the room numbers, the door signs include photos of the local area, I also really like the bold fonts and clean lines of these signs.

Each bedroom also has a large local photo over the bed, my room featured fall colors with leaves, the important harvest time of the year for the Wine industry.

I’m a Diamond with Hilton and I have always gotten very good Diamond treatment at this property. They provide all the posted benefits and more; at times the upgrades are a very nice like suites. They also are one of the Hiltons out there still giving an in room amenity, and they change it up all time! This time I got a Bottle of local wine, large bottle of water, still warm out of the oven Pretzels with local dip, really good cup cakes, and a small basket of fruit. At check in I was also provided an envelope with an Internet voucher, breakfast coupon for the full buffet and a very nice hand written note from the front desk, and typed letter from the GM.

I have been a guest at this property many times and also send a good deal of clients there, so I think my Upgrades might be partly due to that. I have talked with other guests who are Gold and Diamond with Hilton and they report getting very nice upgrades at this hotel (and the Hilton Mainz City). The front desk staff is very gracious to members with a status and they know how the Hilton Honors program works. This stay I was told I was placed in the “best suite in the hotel” and I have to say it was a really nice room; it was classified as a Jr. Suite. I have seen rooms of this size and set up considered a suite at other hotels, as there is two distinctive rooms.

The Hilton Mainz has two wings; The River Wing, and The Dom Wing, a 2nd floor sky bridge connects the wings over a major road. The Dom wing also have a keyed ground level door with access to the old city. In the past the word on the street was to avoid the Dom wing at all cost, this is no longer the case. During the refurbishment this wing was totally gutted, down to the frame. The wing is in a very oddly shaped building leading to the wide mix of room types. There are no rooms with a view in that wing but some rooms like the Jr. Suite I was in was big, with a really cool bathroom. They added a new room type called a Studio, these rooms are all located in the Dom Wing. The studios are large rooms with a sitting area, just short of a Jr. Suite. As this wing got new guts the bathrooms are all very cool, and some are downright huge. The River wing got all new bathrooms as well but fit into the old bathroom spaces in most cases. The Jr. Suites and Presidential suite in the river wing have larger and way cool bathrooms as well.

The breakfast is very good at this hotel and the modern restaurant is a nice environment to enjoy it in. With river views and people watching along the river it is a nice experience. The Breakfast is a buffet with more items on it then you could ever eat, you can also order items made to order. The Hilton Mainz also has a daily lunch and dinner buffet, I have had some business lunches and it is a real good deal and the food it tops. I’m not a fan of buffets most of the time but some how they make it work here.

If you are looking for a place to stay in the Mainz/Wiesbaden or even the Frankfurt area give the Hilton Mainz a try! I think you will like it. If you need a place to sleep on an overnight connection at FRA airport, you can access Mainz via the S-Bahn to the Mainz main station then take a short cab ride to the Hilton. You will get much more bang for your buck (or Euro) at this hotel verse an Airport hotel. The staff is wonderful, the food is good, and the renovations will impress you! These are the best hotel room in Mainz, the renovations have put the room quality above the Hyatt in Mainz in my opinion. I have spent a night or too at the Hyatt, and it is nice.. but the rooms look dated after a night in a new room at the Hilton. If you have any questions about both Hiltons in Mainz please drop me an email.
