My First Experience with the Newly Renovated 757 on United

Considering how much I fly, I'm surprised it took me this long, but I just had my first experience on one of United's newly re-configured 757s. Seatguru doesn't even have the new configuration loaded yet. I was sitting in 15A in Economy+. Here are some thoughts / pics regarding the new configuration (click the pictures for larger versions).

  • 16A/F used to be the best non-First Class seats in the house on the 757, but now those seats are removed for the emergency exit, meaning 17A/F have lots of leg room (not sure if they have the same recline, since those are techinically considered non-economy plus)
  • Laptop power! WOOT! For every three seats, there are now two laptop power ports. I didn't need laptop power, but the light was on so I assume they were active. These are standard 110V plugs, not the pain-in-the-neck EMPower ports of the past.
  • The seat was quite comfortable. I found it comparable to the leather seats found on other United Economy configurations.
  • I didn't get to play with the new tray table as I was in an exit row.
  • I do not like the new seatback storage. There is a mesh pouch with headphones in there. There's also a plastic slot for reading material above the tray table. There is barely room to squeeze a phone into the mesh pouch with the headphones in there. You can take the headphones out, but then where are you going to put them? Also, the area for reading material is tiny. If you brought your own book, good luck fitting it in there. I had a soft-cover book that I had to jam in there. If you have a kindle or iPad, though, it might be the perfect size. One benefit of the mesh is that it will likely be easier to clean: the probability of finding a nasty kleenex in your seatback pocket has just decreased!
  • WiFi was advertised on the monitor outside the gate, but it was not delivered! The signage for the WiFi made me excited. The lack of any Wifi signal on the plane made me sad.
  • The in-flight monitors are stiill the same CRT screens hanging from the ceiling. I think they should move to widescreen LCDs: they are cheaper, weigh less, are high def, look better, and can offer more horizontal screen space.

All in all, I think it's a change for the positive. If they can get the WiFi working, it's a big change for the positive, even though I don't really like the new seatback storage. Have you been on one of the new configs? What do you think? Hopefully next time I can report about the new first class seats!

Good stuff. The seat design should give people in E- a bit more knee room, though certainly at the cost of seatback storage.

There's only the one like it, fyi. With the merger, the final 757 configuration is very much in the air . It may be a unicorn in the long run...

Considering the 757 is a long haul staple of UA's fleet it's too bad UA didn't opt for full unseat IFE as AC did with its entire fleet. Given the need for a new standard coach seat across the fleet -- and particularly on the Boeings -- this would have really given UA a solid marketing edge over it's domestic competitors! I am sure full IFEwould be more appreciated by a greater percentage of customers, including FFers, than $9 wifi.

The most important thing for an elite UA flyer to know about this plane is that the 4 remaining seats in row 16 are not Economy Plus seats. They have the pitch of regular Economy seats. Also the seats in row 16 do not recline but the seats in row 15 do recline into row 16's tiny space. In short row 16 has gone from "very disirable" to "avoid" on this aircraft.
